Applied Media Research- App store!

Hi guys! I'm continuing to find our what people are willing to pay for no that there are a lot of media content available for free.

Today I started to look at the Apple app store and the Android play store and comments and ratings to see what the most popular games were from both free and paid store.

First I looked at the lay store and found some very interesting results...

FREE
The free store on the android provides popular full games such as Angry birds, Cut the Rope (best game ever!), Minecraft, doodle jump and other popular games all for nothing so obviously the statistic show that more people are downloading the free ones as you can get the full ones! The ratings were also very high for the free apps with an average rating of 17.8 out of 20, which isn't bad for free apps!

PAID
The paid store obviously showed less downloads and a lower overall rating of 15.9 and the only difference seemed to be longer games and HD versions of the free popular games. I think these results would be because Android provide top quality games for free so people will to spend money on the paid ones.

Results and my reflection

This showed that people would not be willing to pay full prices for things they can get for free, which I think anyone would agree with! I found this part of my research to be quite interesting as I didn't realise how much android actually offered for free and how many people actually downloaded apps as games such as Temple Run were getting over 1 million downloads! This gave me more of an insight into the android app world and showed how important social gaming and apps are to people.

Then I looked at the Apple App Store....

FREE
The Apple free app store showed different results from as more people were downloading the free apps but the ratings were lower which I found to be unusual but by looking at the apps that are available I began to understand why, as the free app store only provides top quality games as a preview, therefore you can't get very far unless you are paying for these full games.

PAID
Just like the Android store the paid apps had less downloads but higher ratings than the free apps as I had previously discovered that a lot of the top quality games were paid were as Android offered these for free.

People who own apple devices prefer the paid apps but this is because they charge for the best ones but it still shows that people prefer to download the free ones. This research did not give me any significant results to my question so i knew that I had to do something more to gain better results, it gave me an insight to what people are downloading and what content they prefer but not did now show me enough about what people were willing to pay for.
