So to carry on my research on the ONTECA question I started doing some interviews with people to gain more of an insight into what media people were actually paying for, focusing on Apps. I varied the ages of the interviewees from around 15-50, as well as users of Apple and Android as well as a Blackberry tablet users and a Nokia user, to make sure I had some different answers.
The questions I asked were:
- What Devices do you own?
- How many of the Apps you use were paid and how many were free?
- Why did you pay for these Apps?
- Why didn't you pay for the Apps?
- If you paid, were you attracted by the free trial?
- How often do you use your free apps and how often do you use the paid ones?
- Do you purchase any in-game content?
- Would you rather pay for an app than pay for in-game content?
- What other media do you pay for/get for free?
I also filmed one of my interviews which was from a Android and Apple user. Click here to see it!
Results and Refelction
Apple users
The Apple users mostly had game apps and reference apps which they paid for. The older users paid for most of their apps as they were the ones they wanted, which suggests this may be because they have the money to spend. The younger users paid for their games as they found them to be better than the free games after playing free trials. This ties in with my previous discovery of Android offering the more popular full games for free whereas Apple charger 69p.
Android, Blackberry and Nokia users
The Android users did not pay for any of their apps or pay for in-game content as they found that they could get all the best ones for free. The Blackberry user said she would pay for apps as they are the only decent apps available but they are far more expensive than the Apple and Android apps so she does not purchase them anyway and the Nokia user pays for her apps as she likes them to be add free. This again shows that Android offer their users much better apps for free whereas other companies don't seem to provide this.
Kindle, Netflix and Lovefilm
The older interviewees said that they used Kindle to download and read books, the results from this showed that they are more likely to only pay for books as they would only go for what they wanted to read instead of browsing through free and paid books. Others said that they had downloaded free books but to only when they first got the Kindle to get them started. Everybody I interviewed seemed to use LoveFilm or Netflix. The younger interviewees used Netflix but mostly only for the free trial as it allowed them to watch on the go using their phones or tablets. The older ones used LoveFilm as they found it easier and more convenient to get films or TV series on a monthly bases rather than downloading or paying full shop prices.
Video interview
I found the video interview to be the most helpful to me as he explains how he pays for his apps on his iPad put not on his Android phone, which again shows how Apple are not offering many decent free apps. He explains that he pays for the apps on his iPad as he uses them to record music but he would not pay for apps he doesn't need. He then goes on to saying that he uses Steam, a programme that allows you to buy computer games straight to your computer, he says that he pays for these games as they are worth the money due to them being full length games compared to apps which are more for casual gaming. His age also showed that he would only use his money for things that he knew he would use and are of good quality due to him being a 19 year old student.
These results suggested that the younger generation are only paying for apps of a higher quality and if they need them whereas the older generation are stuck in their ways so they will go for the easiest option of just paying.
I found these interviews to be an interesting insight into what media people are paying for and it also gave me the chance to try out some qualitative research methods and showed me how well these methods work. It also showed me how people from different generations are using media very differently as I originally thought that everyone was downloading media the same way I was but it turned out that they weren't. It showed me that everybody is not always as up to date with new media as we think and there might still be some room for old media.
