Introduction
We were given three questions to answer from three different people who are involved in important media companies. These questions were given to us for us to use our knowledge of qualitative research techniques and eventually make a presentation about our findings.
Speakers and Questions set
First speaker-Ian Wareing from the Digital Fiction Factory
The Digital Fiction factory are a company who work with the BBC, Channel 4 and Conker Media to create digital fiction content such as websites for TV shows that give the audience a little bit extra. Here is the question that Ian Set...
The internet, social media and other open systems have allowed for user generated content, crowd sourcing and other forms of audience participation to prevail in digital media. How do we translate these features into storytelling experiences, without treading on the authors toes?
Second Speaker-Jon Wetherall from Ontecta
Onteca is a company that creates game APPS for Nintendo Wii, iTunes, Android, Facebook and IPTV. Here is the question he set...
What new models are there for selling media?
When people download so much media freely, what are people willing to pay for?
What are and what can we learn from the best monetization mechanics for fremium on mobile?
Third Speaker- Cat Lewis form Nine Lives Media
Nine lives media is a production company who make documentaries for all major broadcasters. Here is the question...
Which are the three
most successful ever examples of cross platform television programming,
how did viewers participate and most importantly, what did they gain
from the experience? (I would anticipate answers such as the London
Olympics/Paralympics & Embarrassing Bodies)
Choosing the question
After we had listened to the three presentations I found that I would like to research into the second question made by Onteca. This was because I already had a lot of interest in APPS and use them a lot so I felt that I would have a head start in the research. The other two didn't interest me as I didn't really understand them at first, so I probably went for the easiest option, but after looking into the questions a but more I began to understand and realise that I was not as interested in them as the Onteca question as i found the other two to be quite similar in the way that they are both telling a story. I chose Onteca this as my first option and was given it as my question and then put in a group with two other people, so we could research it together.
We then broke the question into three, enabling us all to have enough work to do within the group..
What new models are there for selling media?
When people download so much media freely, what are people willing to pay for?
What are and what can we learn from the best monetization mechanics for fremium on mobile?
Highlighted in red is my part of the question, so from this I was now able to start my research and then come together with my team members to put it in a presentation.
My Reflection
Having the chance to research questions from actual running companies will give me the chance to learn a lot more about them and how the media industry works as a posed to making up our own questions just for the sake of learning research techniques, I feel that now we have a purpose to put work into researching.
